After Storm Boelo: How Drone Surveys Help Assess Damage Quickly and Safely

October 26, 2026•3 min read

Storm Boelo gave the north of England a battering this week, and the Met Office's 2026/27 storm season has barely started. For anyone responsible for a commercial roof, the real question after a storm isn't whether there's been damage. It's whether anyone has actually looked closely enough to find it?

The Problem With a Quick Visual Check

A roof check from ground level, or even a walk around the perimeter, misses most of what actually causes long-term problems.

Industry guidance on post-storm commercial roof inspections points to the same handful of areas that go unnoticed again and again: flashings and edge details around parapets and abutments that can lift or crease without an obvious leak, membrane seams that lose adhesion while still looking intact, wet insulation sitting beneath a membrane with no visible staining, and drainage that's been blocked or distorted by storm debris.

None of these show up unless someone looks for them specifically, in the right place, at close range.

Why Scaffold Isn't Always the Right First Step

The traditional response to a suspected roof problem is to book scaffold or a mobile elevated platform and wait for access.

That typically means two to three days on site once it's mobilised, compared with a drone capture that's often complete in under two hours, with a few more hours to process the data.

The UK's Work at Height Regulations 2005 don't disappear because a drone is involved, but they do change the shape of the job: instead of putting people onto a storm-damaged roof to find out where the damage is, a survey identifies it first, so any scaffold or platform access that follows can be targeted at the specific areas that need a closer, hands-on look, rather than the whole roof.

What a Drone Roof Survey Actually Delivers

A single flight produces more than a set of photographs.

High-resolution oblique and overhead imagery captures flashings, rooflights, drainage outlets and plant penetrations in enough detail to see a displaced fixing or a hairline split.

That imagery builds into a georeferenced roof plan with every defect marked by location, and an interactive 3D model that lets a surveyor, insurer or contractor walk the roof virtually, measure slopes and areas, and check for ponding without a second site visit.

Where the brief calls for it, the same capture supports classified point cloud data and CAD roof plans for repair or re-roofing design, and thermal imagery to flag damp insulation hiding under a membrane that still looks sound.

Getting Evidence Insurers and Contractors Can Use

A policy may draw a line between storm damage, wear and tear, and poor maintenance, and an insurer will often want to see exactly what's wrong and when it happened before accepting a claim.

A shared 3D model with defects logged by location and photographed in detail gives an insurer, loss adjuster and contractor the same evidence at the same time, rather than three different sets of notes from three separate visits.

Where it matters, a chartered surveyor's condition report can sit alongside the model to support the claim or the repair instruction formally.

If your roof hasn't been checked since the last named storm, that's worth treating as unfinished business.
